Abstract
Although various anatomical and physiological data discussed elsewhere in this book supported the concept of hypothalamic control of the pituitary gland (Green and Harris, 1947), direct evidence for the existence of hypothalamic hormones involved in the release of pituitary hormones was lacking until Saffran and Schally (1955) demonstrated the presence of a corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) in hypothalamic and neurohypophyseal extracts. This opened the way for subsequent discoveries of other hypothalamic regulatory substances. The existence of at least nine hypothalamic regulatory hormones is now established with some certainty (see table 6.1), and four of these substances, thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH), luteinising hormone-releasing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH/FSH-RH), somatostatin, and MSH-release inhibiting factor (MIF), have been isolated in pure state, structurally identified, and synthesised. These substances were also previously called “factors”.
