Abstract

Although frequently viewed as a childhood disorder, FASD is a lifelong condition with implications for function and well-being across the lifespan. The difficulties faced by adults with FASD can be very different from those of children. Navigating greater independence, taking on new responsibilities, and managing the onset of physical or mental health problems can present new challenges for individuals with FASD and those supporting them. Diagnosing FASD during adulthood also presents unique challenges for the clinical team. This chapter will discuss issues relevant to diagnosis of FASD in adulthood including a review of the physical, neurocognitive, and functional profile commonly encountered in adulthood. Special attention will be paid to the mental health issues very frequently experienced by individuals with FASD during this stage of life.

Notes

  1. 1.

Reliability of this framework was undertaken with a group of 21 randomly selected adults with FASD seen at a diagnostic clinic. Two clinical psychologists independently evaluated affect regulation for each case. Inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s Kappa) was 0.79 which is a high level of agreement.
