Abstract
The transcriptome is the set of all RNA molecules in one cell or a population of cells. Transcriptome analysis leads to the identification of genes that are expressed differentially in distinct cell populations with respect to different treatments. Two methodologies for studying transcriptomics are DNA microarray and RNAseq. The current chapter discusses the methodologies for SAGE, CAGE, and DNA microarray. RNAseq as high-throughput technique is discussed in other chapter. Microarrays for transcriptomics typically fall into one of two broad categories: low-density spotted arrays or high-density short probe arrays. The application for transcriptomics includes diagnostics and disease profiling for human and animals and production traits for animals exclusively.
