Abstract
Peter Burke (born 1937) was educated at St Ignatius’ College, Stamford Hill, London, and St John’s College, Oxford. He interrupted work on his D.Phil. at St Antony’s College, Oxford, to become one of the first junior lecturers to be appointed (in the School of European Studies) at the University of Sussex, where he remained for 17 years (1962–79) as Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer in European History and Reader in Intellectual History. He moved to Cambridge in 1979 to become Lecturer in Early Modern European History and Fellow of Emmanuel College, becoming Reader in Cultural History in 1988 and Professor in 1996. He is married to the Brazilian historian Maria Lúcia García Pallares-Burke.
