Abstract
Norman Davies was born in Lancashire and educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was much influenced and encouraged by A.J.P. Taylor. Davies travelled extensively in his 20s, settling eventually in Krakow where he acquired a Polish wife and a PhD. For many years, Davies taught at London University’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (where he was Professor from 1985–1996), and he has made many appearances as guest professor at universities in North America, the Far East and many countries of Europe — especially Poland, where he continues to be regarded as the nation’s outstanding historian.
