Abstract

Richard J. Evans was born in Woodford, Essex, in 1947. He was educated at Forest School, Walthamstow, London, and read Modern History at Jesus College, Oxford, graduating with First Class Honours in 1969 and winning the Stanhope Historical Essay Prize the same year. He was awarded a Hanseatic Scholarship to study in Hamburg and he completed his doctorate at St Antony’s College, Oxford, in 1972.
