Abstract
Felipe Fernández-Armesto was born in London in 1950, of Anglo-Spanish parentage, and attended school in England. He was a Libre-oyente (non-examination student) at the University of Salamanca, and an undergraduate and doctoral student at Oxford (First Class Honours, Final School of Modern History 1972; MA 1976; D.Phil. 1977). He was awarded an Honorary D.Litt. from La Trobe University in 1997. He became a journalist, then a schoolmaster before embarking upon a long apprenticeship in temporary and part-time university jobs, notably at Warwick University and the University of Buckingham. He has been a Fellow of St Antony’s College, Oxford (1981–90); a member of the Modern History Faculty, Oxford (1983–2004); a Professorial Fellow and Professor of Global Environmental History, Queen Mary, University of London (from 2000; Visiting Professor from 2005) and Prince of Asturias Professor in the Department of History, Tufts University, from 2005. He has delivered courses in global, environmental, Spanish and Atlantic history, and has supervised many Masters’ and doctoral students.
