Abstract
Ian Kershaw was born in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1943, and educated at St Bede’s College, Manchester; the University of Liverpool (BA, First Class Honours in History, 1965), and Merton College, Oxford (D.Phil., 1969). In 2004 he was awarded an Honorary D.Litt., from Manchester and an Honorary D.Univ. from Stirling. He was Assistant Lecturer, then Lecturer, in Medieval History of the University of Manchester from 1968 to 1974; thereafter Lecturer (1974–79), Senior Lecturer (1979–87), and Reader Elect in Modern History (1987). He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (1970–72, 1991-); was a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in 1976–77; a Visiting Professor of Contemporary European History, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, 1983–84; Chair of Modern History, University of Nottingham, 1987–89; a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin, 1989–90, and has been Chair of Modern History, University of Sheffield, since 1989. He has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 1991. He was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for services to German history in 1994 and received a Knighthood in 2002.
