Abstract

This chapter aims to review recent developments in the synthesis of sulfur and nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compounds under conditions that include the application of microwave irradiation in the ring-forming step. The review is grouped according to the main heterocycle types in order of increasing complexity; commencing with five-membered sulfur-containing ring systems containing one, two, and three heteroatoms and their fused-ring analogues, followed by six- and seven-membered systems with more than one heteroatom, and then the analogous higher-membered ring systems. Fused-ring aromatic heterocycles and polycyclic molecules are also described.
