Invasive Marine Species in Montenegro Sea Waters

The Montenegrin Adriatic Coast

Abstract

The Adriatic Sea, as part of the Mediterranean, is under a process of temperature rising, allowing the fish from the tropics to expand their areal and to find new homes in areas they previously not part of their distribution ranges. Additionally, human activities, especially the construction of the Suez Canal, as well as the increase in marine traffic and its use of ballast waters, enabled new (foreign) species to pass unhindered into the Adriatic Sea. The species came from the Indo-Pacific Ocean through the Suez Canal, with several introduced from the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar. Passing through the Red Sea, the species colonized the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea, including the Montenegrin coast. The introduction of non-native, allochthonous species is widely recognized as one of the main threats to aquatic biodiversity and impact to human well-being. So far, seven new fish species have been recorded in Montenegrin coastal waters: Tylosurus acus imperialis, Caranx crysos, Siganus luridus, Fistularia commersonii, Stephanolepis diaspros, Sphoeroides pachygaster, Lagocephalus sceleratus. In addition, two new species of crustaceans have been found: Callinectes sapidus and Penaeus aztecus. Based on the results of LEK (Lokal Ecological Knowledge) five new species were recorded in Montenegrin waters: Saurida undosquamis, Siganus rivulatus, Iniistius pavo, Sphyraena viridensis, and Sphyraena chrysotaenia.
