Abstract

Irreversible adsorption processes are often described by the Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) model, which has received considerable attention from a theoretical point of view. The validity of this model and of its generalizations is discussed in this article from both an experimental and a theoretical point of view. It appears that, due to cancelling between two different effects, hydrodynamic interactions and the diffusion of the particles in the bulk phase during the adsorption process, the RSA is a good first approximation to model the distribution function g(r) of systems of adsorbed particles. On the other hand, for adsorption kinetics no clear conclusions may be drawn, neither experimentally nor theoretically. For deposition of large particles influenced by gravity, the ballistic model is introduced and successfully compared to first experimental results.
