Zusammenfassung
Der vollständige irreversible Ausfall aller Hirnfunktionen wird als (dissoziierter) Hirntod bezeichnet. Für die Feststellung entscheidend sind der klinisch-neurologische Befund und eine Beobachtungszeit in Abhängigkeit von Lebensalter und zugrundeliegender Erkrankung, nachdem bestimmte Ausschlusskriterien erfüllt sind. Die Beobachtungszeit, die zwischen 12 und 72 h liegt, kann durch apparative Zusatzdiagnostik verkürzt werden. Der Hirntod ist mit dem Tod des Individuums gleichzusetzen und berechtigt zum Beenden einer maschinellen Beatmung oder zur Explantation bei Organspendern.
