Abstract.

Using the VLT/UVES we have resolved the narrow H\(\alpha\) and H\(\beta\) components in the fast collisionless shock of SN 1006. The FWHM of those components is merely 21 km s-1. Comparing the narrow component measurement of SN 1006 with those of other Balmer-dominated SNRs shows that the width of the narrow component does not correlate in a simple way with the shock velocity. The implications for the pre-heating mechanism responsible for the width of the narrow components in Balmer dominated supernova remnants is discussed.

Based on observations collected at ESO, Paranal, Chile.
