About the editors

Marc Hanschen is currently the Managing Senior Consultant at the Department of Trauma Surgery, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich (TUM). Prior to working at Klinikum rechts der Isar, he started his training at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Marc Hanschen specializes in trauma care of the pelvis and the lower extremities. He has a special interest in complex reconstructive cases and the management of fracture related infections. Furthermore, he is deputy head of the department of experimental surgery and focuses his research on the posttraumatic response of the immune system.

Peter Biberthaler’s research activities concentrate on his core clinical focus areas. A very important aspect of these focus areas is the care of severe and multiple trauma patients, a major part of which is the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. Professor Biberthaler’s other major focus area, shoulder surgery, is the logical consequence of his scientific research and clinical practice in the field of traumatology. He is the first person to have been able to visualize the blood circulation in direct proximity to ruptures by means of intraoperative intravital-microscopic imaging.

After completing his medical studies at LMU Munich, Professor Biberthaler spent time abroad in the USA and Brazil. On his return he started his surgical training under the supervision of Professor Schweiberer at the Surgical Clinic at the city centre campus of LMU Munich. Having successfully completed his training leading to German medical board certification in surgery in 2003, Professor Biberthaler went on to specialize in trauma surgery. In 2007 he acquired his German medical board certification in orthopedics and trauma surgery. He assumed the position of full professor and department chair at Technical University of Munich in 2011.

James Waddell was born in Alberta and graduated from the University of Alberta Medical School in 1967. He did his postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Toronto and assumed a staff position at St. Michael’s Hospital in 1973. He has occupied a number of positions at St. Michael’s Hospital including Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of the Trauma Program; he completed 10 years as the Professor & Chairman, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Toronto in June of 2006. He has also occupied a number of positions in the Canadian Orthopaedic Association including President. He has completed a 10 year term as the Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Surgery. He just completed five years as deputy editor (hip) for JBJS and continues as the associate editor (hip fracture) for BJJ.”

He is currently the orthopaedic lead for the Ministry of Health for the  province of Ontario Canada and the Secretary General of SICOT”.
