Effects of Size on Phase Transitions in Ferroics

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics Aims and scope

Abstract

Features of the behavior of phase transition temperature in nanoscale ferroics are discussed within phenomenological theories. It is shown that the critical temperature can shift considerably upon second-order transitions to both the commensurate and incommensurate phases, depending on the characteristic dimensions of a sample and its surface properties. It is shown that the effects of size in materials with a first-order phase transition strongly influence the process of nucleation, shifting the temperature of a phase transition or even changing its type.
