Abstract

A modified system of group equation is obtained for the first moments of high-energy electron distribution function. The system includes equations for the balance of concentration and flux density of electrons. The main difference of the proposed system from the available versions is that the terms responsible for the electron generation have been derived directly from the ionization integral. This system is used for numerical simulation of the evolution of a relativistic runaway electron avalanche in a uniform electric field. The calculated avalanche characteristics (amplification time, mean electron energy, directional velocity, energy spectrum, and spatial electron distributions) are in good agreement with the results of Monte Carlo calculations.
