Abstract
The widespread barnacles of the family Chthamalidae are among the most problematic taxa, due to a low number of diagnostic features and a high morphological plasticity. The molecular approach, however, appears to be a key tool to address phylogenetic relationships and to delimit evolutionary lineages within this family. Two species of this family, Chthamalus barnesi and Microeuraphia permitini, occur in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The present study aims to address the phylogenetic positions of these two species among other members of the family Chthamalidae with the use of two mitochondrial markers, COX1 and 16S. The habitat preference and distributions of the species within these water bodies are also presented here. A molecular analysis recovered three Western Indian Ocean species, C. barilani, C. barnesi and M. permitini, as three distinct genetic units with a close phylogenetic affinity. These three species show a genetic association with the Indo-West Pacific species complex C. malayensis. The present observations also revealed that the two species rarely occur together, as C. barnesi prefers more exposed habitats, while M. permitini occurs in sheltered coastal areas.
