Phase State and Thermal Stability of Powders Prepared by Mechanical Activation of Iron in an Organosilicon Solution

Abstract

Dispersity, structure, phase composition, and thermal stability of powders prepared by the mechanical activation of iron in a heptane containing vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) are studied by the X-ray diffraction analysis and Mössbauer, Auger-, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that the presence of VTES in the grinding medium makes it possible to prepare powders with the mean particle size on the order of 1 μm and to form a nanocomposite comprising a mixture of α-Fe and Fe3C phases separated by interlayers of a third phase (iron silicate and/or silicon dioxide). The prepared nanocomposite is thermally stable up toT = 800°C.
