Abstract
The structural performance of concrete beams of two concrete grades cast at different times is largely determined by the interfacial shear strength between the concrete layers and the bond between the embedded rebar and the surrounding concrete. Thus, the purpose of this research is to determine the shear strength at the interface of recycled concrete and normal concrete, as well as the bond strength between rebar and recycled concrete. An experimental programme based on slant shear and splitting test was carried out to determine the interfacial shear strength, with the main variables being the type of concrete and the casting time interval between concrete layers. Also, pull-out tests were performed to determine the bond strength of rebar and recycled concrete. The test results suggest that the interfacial shear strength of concrete layers cast at 4-h time interval is higher than the 24-h cast time interval for all concrete types. The pull-out tests also show that the bond strength of recycled aggregate concrete without crumb rubber is higher (16.3%) than that of normal concrete. The bond strength of recycled aggregate concrete decreases with the addition of crumb rubber. However, when the bond strength is normalized to the compressive strength, the recycled aggregate concrete's bond strength does not suffer any loss. The study also suggests that the crumb rubber concentration in the recycled aggregate concrete mix be limited to 5% to ensure monolithic behaviour between concrete layers and sufficient bond strength between the embedded rebar and the surrounding recycled concrete.
