Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
Teaching clinical reasoning competencies to nursing students poses challenges to nursing preceptors, caused by heterogeneous training situations and low didactic competences of these. Knowledge about viable teaching methods that improve clinical reasoning are becoming increasingly more in focus. The five minute preceptor model seems to be a suitable method in this respect.
Aim
The purpose of the paper is to present the impact of the five minute preceptor model teaching method on different areas of nursing preceptorship and the practical applicability of the model.
Method
A sco** review following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology was conducted. A literature search took place from July 2022 to February 2023 in the databases Medline, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, and Science Direct, using the keywords „five minute precept*“, „precept*“, and „preceptor education“. Additionally, a search was performed in Google Scholar. Finally, seven publications were included in the sco** review.
Results
Application of the five minute preceptor model has a positive impact on the learning environment and allows better assessment of students’ knowledge levels and learning needs. It also improves the structure of preceptorship. Other positive effects relate to student learning, the provision of feedback and improving the didactic skills of nursing preceptors. The applicability factor is hardly dealt with in the seven publications identified. Only a low training effort and easy implementation as well as the associated time savings were described in the literature.
Conclusion
Even though there is evidence of positive effects of the teaching method, empirical studies on the applicability of the five minute preceptor model in practical nursing training are lacking. Implementation of the model seems to make sense only after appropriate empirical testing. Especially the nursing preceptor’s perspective should be considered.
