Abstract
This study investigated the effects of carrageenan, a natural polysaccharide, and metal ions on the physical properties of porous contact lenses. Porous hydrogel contact lenses were polymerized using a foaming agent, and interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) were formed with carrageenan for 5 h at 37° C. Subsequently, the lenses were immersed in various metal ion solutions. The porous contact lenses showed higher water content, oxygen transmittance, and wettability than non-porous contact lenses, but had lower compressive strength. The contact lens was networked with carrageenan and metal ions to improve mechanical strength, a disadvantage of porous contact lenses. Forming networks between carrageenan and metal ions resulted in a slight decrease in physical properties compared to porous contact lenses but still produced better properties than non-porous contact lenses. Introducing carrageenan and metal ions into porous contact lenses allowed us to address the problems of porous contact lenses, and improved their properties compared to ordinary contact lenses.
