Abstract

The lithology in the region of Godavari Valley Coal Fields of Southern India is mainly composed of sandstones of different types, clay combined with shale, coal seams and some other soft rocks. Due to variations in the strength properties of different layers, the lower strength material easily tends to slip along the bedding plane or may creep up due to the compression offered by the overlying layers and affect the stability of slope in open-pit mines. In this study, influence of coal seams present in between sandstones on the overall stability of a high wall benches of Kistaram opencast mine of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is studied using FLAC3D tool. The stability analysis of highwall benches in different phases of bench formation (exposure of coal seams namely A, LB1, LB2) is carried out by interpreting the stress, strain, displacement values at selected plane on each bench. It was deduced that presence of weak layers in between the comparatively denser layers have a major impact over the stability of the slope and local failures were observed along the slope after exposure of each coal.
