Samenvatting
In dit artikel beschrijven wij ontwikkelingen in het roken en het gebruik van alcohol en drugs onder Nederlandse jongeren en jongvolwassenen van 12 tot 25 jaar. Onderzoek onder scholieren laat zien dat in 2007 de helft van de twaalf- tot achttienjarigen in de afgelopen maand alcohol had gedronken, een op de vijf had gerookt en een op de twaalf cannabis had gebruikt. Achter deze aantallen gaan echter grote verschillen schuil: het middelengebruik neemt toe met de leeftijd en is doorgaans hoger onder laagopgeleide jongeren. Voor alcohol en cannabis zijn sekseverschillen gevonden, voor roken niet. De prevalentie van (probleem)gebruik van alcohol en drugs is veruit het hoogst onder jongvolwassenen (18–24 jaar). Herhaalde peilingen laten zien dat het percentage (zware en dagelijkse) rokers onder zowel scholieren als jongvolwassenen in het afgelopen decennium is gedaald, al lijkt er thans sprake van stabilisatie. Ook op de verschillende maten voor alcoholgebruik lijkt zich een gunstige trend af te tekenen en onder scholieren is sinds midden jaren negentig een geringe afname in het cannabisgebruik gerapporteerd. Daar staat tegenover dat Nederlandse scholieren van 15 en 16 jaar vergeleken met hun leeftijdgenoten in andere Europese landen nog steeds koploper zijn op verschillende maten voor alcoholgebruik, en ook in de hogere regionen vallen wat betreft hun cannabisgebruik. Middelengebruik komt relatief vaak voor onder jongeren van sommige vormen van het speciaal onderwijs, de jeugdzorg, jeugdinrichtingen, uitgaande jongeren en jongvolwassenen.
