Preparation of monodispersed mesoporous silica using imidazolium ionic liquids under a neutral condition

Abstract

Mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) have drawn great attention in recent years. In spite of good progress made in the past years, the acid or base catalysis is still the most common way to prepare monodisperse MSNs. Here, MSNs were synthesized under a neutral condition based on ionic liquids templates. There is no use of acids and bases, which improves environmental friendliness. The temperature, co-surfactant (propanetriol, PT) and ionic strength (KCl) exhibit complicated effects on the formation of MSNs. The results show that MSNs increase first and then decrease in size with the increase of the temperature, as well the effect of ionic strength. And high ionic strength will destroy the formation of the MSNs. The addition of PT significantly increases the particle size of MSNs, but reduces the uniformity of MSNs. In addition, multistep addition modes further contribute to a bigger size of MSNs by decreasing the formation nuclei at early stage. The results suggest the vital balance between nucleation and growth of silica and offer a new method for develo** the MSNs with potential applications.
