Abstract
Grapevine crown gall (GCG), which is caused by tumorigenic Allorhizobium vitis, is the most important bacterial disease of grapevine throughout the world. The risk of damage to grapevine, such as inferior growth and death, were assessed using the results of GCG occurrence in 12 different commercial vineyards in Japan. The results of general linear mixed model analysis strongly indicated that the symptoms of inferior growth and death of vines were caused by gall incidence. Moreover, the results from these vineyards were used in a meta-analysis. With gall symptoms, the integrated relative risk values of inferior growth, death, and combined data with inferior growth and death were 14.79 (95% confidence interval: 8.51–25.71, p ≤ 0.0001), 17.95 (95% confidence interval: 10.23–31.50, p ≤ 0.0001), and 17.16 (95% confidence interval: 10.66–27.64, p ≤ 0.0001), respectively, indicating that inferior growth and death of grapevines were significantly increased by gall incidence. This study showed strong evidence that GCG is one of the high-risk factors of grape production in vineyards.
