Abstract

We present the design of a miniaturized multiple-band geodetic-grade GNSS reference antenna covering the Bs band of the Chinese Beidou System. The proposed antenna combines a spiral antenna operating in the L band (1160–1610 MHz) and a four-point-fed patch antenna operating in the Bs band (2477–2507 MHz). A miniaturized vertical choke ring with a serrated cavity is applied to mitigate multipath signals functioning in both the L and Bs bands. The modified choke ring ground plane ensures the geodetic-grade multipath suppression capability of the antenna, and its far smaller size compared with a conventional choke ring ground results in a relative gain increase at low elevation angles. The proposed antenna features a millimeter-grade phase center variation, an axial ratio of less than 4 dB above an elevation of 10°, and front back ratios of 30 dB and 25 dB in the L band and Bs band, respectively. The gain roll-off is reduced by approximately 3 dB compared to the conventional choke ring antenna, which means better reception of satellite signals. The volume of the proposed antenna is one-tenth that of the state-of-the-art 3-dimensional choke ring antenna. All these results show that the proposed antenna is an appropriate choice for geodetic-grade GNSS reference antennas.
