Abstract
Iron oxide nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3 NP) have vast applications worldwide in different fields due to their antimicrobial, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Now these nanoparticles gained much attention as a catalyst. The conventional methods used for the synthesis of nanoparticles involved the use of chemicals that are harmful to both human beings and the environment. These days several works had been done on plant-based synthesis of Fe NPs. These methods are economical, safe and eco-friendly. In this work, Calotropis procera latex was used for the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles. Calotropis procera commonly known as Akra or Akanal. The plant is a perennial shrub with medicinal and religious values but not edible. The synthesized nanoparticles were used as a heterogeneous catalyst in the transesterification of oil extracted from seeds of Calotropis procera in the synthesis of biodiesel. Our main purpose is to synthesize biodiesel from Calotropis procera seed oil and minimize the excess burden on fossil fuels. Different characterization techniques UV–visible, XRD, FTIR and FESEM were used for the synthesized nanoparticles. The size of synthesized nanoparticles is calculated using ImageJ software. Synthesized biodiesel was tested using twelve different parameters and characterizations of FTIR and GCMS were also performed. The size of the synthesized nanoparticles is found between 3 and 5 nm which act as nanocatalyst and the synthesized biodiesel possess all the parameters that are necessary for biodiesel to act as fuel.
