Sebaceous glands in the mouth

An investigation with particular reference to serum cholesterol and atherosclerosis

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

Seven hundred and fourteen patients admitted to a general hospital were examined for the presence or absence of buccal sebaceous glands. Serum cholesterol was estimated and the incidence of B.C.G. abnormalities and calcification of the aortic arch noted in every third patient aged 31 or over. The incidence of vascular disorders was noted in all patients aged 31 or over.

No evidence was found that the presence of sebaceous glands was associated with alteration of serum cholesterol levels, or with altered incidence of signs and symptoms of atherosclerosis.

There was a fall in the incidence of glands in females after the age of 60 years. Females as a group showed significantly higher serum cholesterol values than males.
