Summary
The effect of pyrimethamine (PY) on cell-mediated immunity in mice as manifested by contact hypersensitivity and tolerance to DNFB was studied in this experiment. It was demonstrated that immune suppression induced by supra-optimal dose of DNFB in sensitization could be reversed by PY when administered on the day of sensitization. Immune tolerance caused by i.v. injection of the tolerogen, i.e., DNFB, could also be reversed by this drug when given on the day of sensitization. It had, however, no effect on contact sensitivity reaction induced by optimal dose of DNFB in sensitization. It is suggested that this drug might be able to inhibit the antigen-activated suppressor T cells. It may, therefore, prove to be a useful immunoregulator in clinical practice as well as in experimental research.
