Abstract
In high-resolution spectra of fast ion beams, employing a grating of high groove density in a 2m grazing-incidence monochromator, asymmetric line broadening has been observed. The effect is explained in terms of Doppler broadening and atomic lifetimes. Various procedures to reduce the broadening by narrowing the angular acceptance of the detection system have been applied.
Line widths (FWHM) ofΔλ=3 pm at 8<λ/nm<17 have been obtained. Fine structure-resolvedn=2 ton=3 transitions in one-, two- and three-electron ions ofO andF are shown, demonstrating the feasibility of high resolution EUV spectroscopy using fast ion beams.

We are grateful to the accelerator crew for providing the ion beams, to G. Schneider for assistance during the accelerator beam time, and to H. v. Buttlar for his continual interest and critical reading of the manuscript. Without the laser treatment of the exciter foils, carried out by B. Große-Kreul, the experiment would not have been possible. The grazing incidence monochromator and gratings have been supplied under grants by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
