Summary

A 200-item biographical information blank was constructed to determine discriminating characteristics in the life history antecedents of readmissions and non-readmissions to mental hospitals. TheS population (N=240) was composed of 60 readmissions and 60 non-readmissions from each of two state mental institutions. A chi-square analysis was utilized to determine those items that discriminated between patients who had been readmitted to the hospitals and those patients who had not been readmitted. A total of 143 of the 200 items were significant in one hospital, while 114 items were significant in the other. Sixty-three items had one or more options that were significant in the same direction in both hospitals.
