Abstract

Chaenothecopsis polissica V.P. Heluta et Sukhomlyn, sp. nov. (Mycocaliciales, Ascomycota) from late Eocene Rovno amber (Ukraine) is described. In the shape of fruit bodies and morphology of mycelium, the new species is similar to late Eocene C. bitterfeldensis, although ascomata of C. polissica sp. nov. are significantly smaller. Among the extant calicioid species of fungi and lichens, C. marcineae is the closest species to C. polissica, according to fruit body shape and size. The former species is reported to grow on spruce resin from boreal North America (Canada and United States) and Europe (Finland). C. polissica sp. nov. represents the smallest-fruited species of resinicolous calicioids and is the second record of fossil fungi in Rovno amber.
