Abstract
Diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), and citric acid (CA) were applied to study their effects on cadmium (Cd) accumulation in Boehmeria nivea. The results demonstrated that the growth of Boehmeria nivea in Cd polluted soil (50 mg/kg Cd) was improved using all of the chelating agents, but the Boehmeria nivea biomass was higher with CA than with EDTA and DTPA. The concentrations of Cd in shoots were higher than those in roots. After treating with 8 mmol/kg EDTA, the highest Cd concentrations in shoots and roots were 29.72 and 27.51 mg/kg DW, respectively; but maximum amounts of Cd were accumulated in plant shoots (201.41 µg/pot) and roots (176.11 µg/pot) after treating with 8 mmol/kg CA. All chelants promoted a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) within the plant tissues of Boehmeria nivea, and maximum MDA values of 69.99, 71.35, and 65.35 nmol/g FW (fresh weight) were reached when 16 mmol/kg EDTA, DTPA, and CA were added, respectively. The applied chelants in most of the treatments alleviated plant oxidative stress from Cd, and SOD, POD, and CAT concentrations were altered at different concentrations of EDTA, DTPA, and CA. This study can be used as an important reference for the further application of Boehmeria nivea in soil remediation work.
