A new isochroman, (3R,4S)-3,4-dihydro-8-hydroxy-4-methoxy-3-methylisocoumarin (1), and three known compounds were isolated from the marine fungus Phomopsis sp. (No. Gx-4). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR. Primary bioassays and preliminary pharmacological tests revealed that compounds 1 and 3 can accelerate the growth of subintestinal vessel plexus (SIV) branches markedly, but compounds 2 and 4 can inhibit their growth.
