Abstract

The construction of the bedding rock slope of AK3 + 690 to AK3 + 888 in Tonghuang Expressway began on November 23, 2003. After cracks appeared at the back edge of the slope in 2004, the support measures were optimized immediately and reinforcement measures were applied to the areas already under construction. In this study, monitoring instruments were installed at different sections and heights of the slope and carefully monitored. Combined with the geological data of the slope, the deformation and stability of the slope during construction were studied through reliable monitoring data and the establishment of numerical models for slope simulation analysis. The results show that poor engineering geological conditions and rock mass structure conditions are the main internal factors. With the progress of engineering construction, excavation is an important factor for slope deformation. The failure mode of the slope in this study is sliding-bending failure, and the excavation induces the sliding body to slide along the weak interlayer. Once it is connected with the shear sliding surface of the fractured rock mass at the slope foot, the slope will become unstable. After the slope support was implemented, the deformation did not increase significantly and the slope was basically stable, indicating that the support method has effectively controlled the deformation of the slope.
