Abstract

Nanoscience and technology are rapidly emerging fields that encompass the design, production, and exploitation of novel structures, materials and devices at the scale of 1–100 nm. However, major concerns have been raised regarding the potential risks to the ecosystem and public health due to the exposure of nanomaterials. It’s a great challenge to quantify and image nanomaterials in environmental matrices, particularly in the biological samples, which is essential to assess the consequential risks. This chapter provided a comprehensive review of the advanced methods for quantifying and imaging nanomaterials in biological samples with a detailed discussion on the strengths and limitations. To satisfy the increasing demands on assessing the impacts of nanomaterials at sub-cellular levels, multiple methods should be applied simultaneously in the future.
