Handbook of Oxidative Stress in Cancer: Mechanistic Aspects

Abstract

Oxidative stress regulates NF-κB signaling pathway and induces the transcription of genes related to apoptosis and cell proliferation. Due to its crucial role in the pathogenesis of diseases caused by oxidative damage, it is believed that NF-κB is a promising target for treatment of diseases resulting from ROS, like cancer. There is a plethora of bioactive natural compounds, isolated from plants and organisms that exhibit anti-tumor activity against various types of cancer through modulation of ROS/NF-κB signaling. Some of these compounds belong to large natural product families like terpenoids, alkaloids, steroids and saponins. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of small molecule modulators of ROS/NF-κB signaling, their anticancer properties, and their future perspectives for cancer therapy.
