Abstract
There are two primary indications to repair a cleft palate: the need to close the communication between oral and nasal cavities, and achieve good phonation. Palatoplasty in early years was limited to the closure of the fissure; this very often resulted in closed palate but functionally speaking, an incompetent palate. In this situation, we need an assessment from a speech pathologist, if they feel that the muscle movements are poor, and the palate length is short, we must see which options can better achieve the lengthening of the short palate. The various options are redo palatoplasty, Furlow palatoplasty, pharyngeal flap, double-opposing buccinator flap, and sphincter pharyngoplasty.
