Abstract
In the human body, epithelium serve common transport mechanisms. Epithelial cells are functionally polarized determined by the different set of membrane transporters on the luminal and basolateral side of the cell. This allows unidirectional absorption or secretion process; absorption going from lumen across the luminal and basolateral membranes into the interstitial space and hence into the capillaries. Secretion will be from the capillaries, trans-epithelially into the lumen.
