Abstract
China managed to resist contemporary globalization until 1978, when it launched the “open door” policy that gradually shifted China toward a socialist market economy. Joint ventures were encouraged with foreign companies before foreign direct investment took place in the mid-1990s. With its accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001 and the completion of its market opening pledges in 2006, China formally entered the age of the market economy and an era of neoliberalization (Harvey, 2005).
