Abstract
The aim of this unit is to work on the unit “meter” and its relation to the unit “centimeter”. First, before measuring the objects, students select objects in the classroom whose length can be meaningfully expressed in meters or centimeters. The students also acquire knowledge about examples for different lengths. In order to deepen their knowledge about the use of a ruler, the students, in a further phase, create their own ruler out of cardboard. The individual realization of the essential properties of a ruler serves as a diagnostic tool for further instruction.
