Abstract

This article describes the connection between games and learning. Learning is an integral part of every game and industry leaders know about this potential. Learning in informal settings, learning in and about games, finding out, documenting and instructing others is a strong component in communities around games. Learning and serious games should not be the only games in learning settings as their potential is limited and commercial games offer a lot of benefits to non-formal and formal learning. Describing the current situation in the games for learning ecosystem, the article shows the needs of educators to be able to implement commercially successful games in learning settings. Several examples of successful games for learning illustrate how to use games in learning and the areas to develop are described, so that game-based learning and the use of commercial games in the educational market can be further developed.
