Abstract
The entry presents a review of definitions of leadership, illustrated by historical development of this concept. It also characterizes various kinds of leadership, from the Great Man theory and early research done at Ohio and Michigan, contemporary ideas such as distributed, shared, authentic, and empowering delineations of leadership.
In doing so, there are introduced mechanisms used by leaders for garnering support, that is, social influence and its various manifestations, and charisma in its classical personality-based definition, as well as the mission-based one.
The summary section identifies exemplary attempts at measuring leadership effectiveness, concluding that in-depth studies on leadership are still needed to understand this critical aspect of introducing social or business change-making.
