A Multidisciplinary Approach to Promoting Physical Activity Among Older People

The Palgrave Handbook of Ageing and Physical Activity Promotion

Abstract

This chapter serves as an introduction to the handbook. It outlines the rationale, scope, and contents of the handbook. Definitions and distinctions are provided for the key terms for this handbook: ‘physical activity’ and ‘older people’. The chapter then argues for the adoption of an ecological approach that encompasses the different relevant disciplines for understanding and promoting physical activity among older people. A theoretical framework for synthesising the different disciplines will be presented along with examples to demonstrate the importance of each discipline within the model. The chapter concludes with implications for practitioners promoting physical activity among older people.
