Ageing with Autistic-Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adults

Abstract

Little is known how subjects with autistic-spectrum disorder (ASD) age. Anecdotal evidence shows that some may age better than others. The current review evaluates the ASD ageing perspective from a real-life experience. The identified domains for successful ASD ageing (obtaining ASD diagnosis in adulthood, available service provisions to provide support and maintain independence, research to understand ASD brain neurobiology and functioning) are discussed in the context of latest developments in the field. In particular, we reflect on the importance of obtaining the correct ASD diagnosis in adulthood, the unmet needs of ASD adults, as well as the latest work done on ‘ageing out’ of ASD.
