Parenting and Family Processes in Child Maltreatment and Intervention

Abstract

This chapter describes an evidence-based intervention for child maltreatment and other traumas, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

TF-CBT is a time-limited, resiliency-focused treatment model provided to children and adolescents (ages 3–18 years) and their parents or primary caretakers in individual parallel sessions. To date, TF-CBT is the most extensively tested child trauma intervention; it has been extensively evaluated in randomized controlled trials for diverse trauma types, developmental levels, settings and cultures. This chapter describes the TF-CBT treatment model including core TF-CBT principles (proportionality of phases; including the core TF-CBT components summarized by the acronym “PRACTICE”; use of gradual exposure throughout treatment; and including parents or caregivers), reviews the current state of TF-CBT research, and provides information about TF-CBT therapist certification.
