Abstract
In a changing world, the increased urbanization of modern cities makes the development of smart cities necessary. The basic purpose of smart cities is to improve citizens’ quality of living as well as to contribute to the financial, social and political progress, the creation of new and more advanced services and the sustainability of the city. The achievement of this goal is feasible through the implementation of architectures and platforms that can incorporate together the various components of the city and make them interact in an effective way. Also, in order to achieve the satisfaction of the specific needs of the city, the system, and by extension the integrated technologies and architectures, has to fulfill a minimum set of requirements. In this paper, we discuss the key architectures that have already been proposed in the literature in order to find the most appropriate ones to be applied to the development of smart cities, and the basic and most common requirements that these architectures aim to satisfy.
