Abstract

While China has many different hands in various businesses across Africa, its current engagement with African countries is primarily focused on sectors such as infrastructure development, reconstruction of the public service, and extraction of natural resources. It is important to understand what is happening in Africa, not only for African economic, political and social development but also for the rest of the underdeveloped world, as successes and mistakes can generate important lessons for the future. This chapter explores the involvement of China in West Africa and its implications for regional integration through the financing and construction of regional infrastructure development projects.
