Abstract

A language disorder is characterized by difficulties in language acquisition and in the use of language across modalities (i.e., spoken, written, or sign), as well as deficits in the ability to understand and use language socially (American Psychiatric Association, DSM-5 Task Force Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders: DSM-5™ (5th ed.). American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.books.9780890425596, 2013). A language disorder can negatively impact spoken and written language abilities and social functioning (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Social communication disorder. (Practice Portal). Retrieved August, 24, 2021, from www.asha.org/Practice-Portal/Clinical-Topics/Social-Communication-Disorder/, n.d.-b, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Spoken language disorders. (Practice Portal). Retrieved August, 24, 2021, from www.Practice-Portal/Clinical-Topics/Spoken-Language-Disorders, n.d.-c). For this reason, effective remediation of a language disorder is necessary. This chapter will define language disorder and discuss the process for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Following this discussion, the chapter will review the assessment process. Finally, strategies for intervention will be provided.
