Abstract
Digital human modeling has been one of the topics studied in the field of human factors and ergonomics. With a high amount of literature in the databases, researchers have conducted and analyzed many different applications in digital human modeling. In this paper, a brief bibliometric analysis of digital human modeling was conducted to provide some background on the topic based on the existing literature. Four sample manikins were created, and a pre-designed excavator was imported into the virtual environment in the 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software RAMSIS. The purpose of this study is to conduct ergonomic simulations and analyses of the manikins, to discover areas of improvement in the components of the excavator, and to determine the optimal adjustment ranges for the components. The positions of the manikins, the comfort of the manikins’ positions, and a few adjustments were analyzed when the manikins performed specific tasks in the excavator. Eight components of the excavator were analyzed with the analysis functions in the RAMSIS software and adjustment ranges of the relevant components of the excavators were tested. As a result, the optimal possible adjustment ranges were determined so that the design of the excavator supports the decrease of discomfort feelings of the manikins.
